Data Sources & Attribution

Last updated: June 2, 2026

Road511 normalizes traffic data from 30+ US state and Canadian provincial 511 systems, plus federal datasets and community sources, into a single API. We honor each source's license. This page lists those sources and the attribution their licenses require — please display the relevant credits when you redistribute or present this data.

Required credits

When your application surfaces data from the following sources, you must display these credits:

  • OpenStreetMap (truck restrictions): © OpenStreetMap contributors — data under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. See openstreetmap.org/copyright.
  • U.S. Energy Information Administration (fuel prices): Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
  • NREL (alternative fuel stations): Data provided by NREL / U.S. DOE / Alliance for Sustainable Energy.

U.S. federal datasets — the FHWA National Bridge Inventory, National Highway & Freight Networks, and the FRA Highway-Rail Crossing Inventory — are works of the U.S. federal government in the public domain (17 U.S.C. §105). State and provincial DOT feeds are published for public reuse; specific feeds may request attribution (e.g. Data provided by 511NY).
